When I read the first review on this vacuum about it being smelly, I thought maybe not all of them would have the same issue. Since it was the strongest wet/dry cordless hand vacuum that I could find, I decided to order it anyway. It’s a lot more powerful than our old 7.2 volt wet/dry Dustbuster. But, the smell that it gives off when in use is pretty strong. So, if you don’t really need the wet pick-up feature too much (I don’t pick up wet messes with the vacuum as often as I thought I would), I would recommend the Black & Decker CHV1400 14.4-Volt Cyclonic DustBuster. It’s gotten pretty good reviews and our Black & Decker held up well over the years.

I like the vaccum a lot it works well but from day one I have not been able to get the automatic cord retraction to work. Yes, I know I could return it but the reason I ordered it on line is because I do not have time to go shopping. I purchase the Dirt Devil because I have a upright one that I have had for years and love it.

I purchased the Dirt Devil Vision after much research and review. My house has mostly laminate, tile, and linoleum floors with 3 bedrooms having a very low pile, wall to wall, carpet. I really wanted a vacuum that was designed for cleaning the non carpeted floors and area rugs, but would still be good enough for use on my wall to wall carpets. This vacuum seemed like a good match of a hard surface tool and a air driven carpet tool.

    The good:

This vacuum has a surprising amount of suction(airflow) and although I didn’t think I would use it, I ended up using the adjustable suction a lot! It was so convenient being on the handle and I loved that it actually turned down the speed of the vacuum motor not just opened a hole or something in the handle. The vacuum looks nice and feels like a decent quality for its price. It’s more quiet than most canister vacs I’ve tried too. The hard surface attachment did seem to be designed to not scuff or harm hardwood floors or table legs.

    The bad:

This vacuum suffers from some serious flaws. I am not sure of the designer’s intent but it seems like they tried to make a vacuum that would be good at both carpeted and none carpeted floors. Unfortunately they made something that isn’t very good at either. As a hard surface only vacuum the dirt devil vision could have been great except that the floor tool they offer for this purpose is more like something I would expect a maker to throw in the box as an after thought for a purely carpet only machine. The twisting head sounds nice but it has a friction joint in it that is designed to make it hold the head in whatever twisted position you put it in. Unfortunately that means having to reach down and twist it back straight with your hand or your foot every time you finish cleaning around that chair leg. You can twist it by just twisting the hose handle but it sticks and will not go back without using your hand. It is amazingly frustrating. The hard surface tool is also very small. If you only had hard surfaces to clean, I would suggest going out and buying another head for this vacuum. At 10″ it is just too small for large open areas. 12″ would be decent and vacuums that are serious about being designed for hardwood floors would be 14″.

The air driven carpet tool was the biggest problem for me. I ended up returning the machine because of this attachments poor quality and design. While it may be for carpeting, they still included a hard rubber strip on the bottom that I can only assume is for when the tool is used on hard surfaces (which makes no sense to me, it already has an attachment for that) but it caused me all sorts of problems on my carpet because of it. The rubber strip does not move across the carpet well and often made pushing the carpet head very difficult if not impossible on one of my largest area rugs. If you apply any pressure to the head at all the air-driven brush head stops. On several of my low pile carpets just the weight of the head itself cased the brush to not spin.

    Conclusion:

Overall, I really liked this vacuum but the attachments were so poorly designed and thought out with serious quality issues, that I cannot find a reason to recommend this product. I am going to go ahead and offer the product 3 stars because the vacuum base is pretty good and if you only have hard surfaces and buy another hardwood floor head (around $20 elsewhere) the total price and end product are still pretty good.

If you expect this vacuum to work in a home with equal amounts of hard and soft flooring or any wall to wall carpet, you have a serious disappointment coming.

Know what your buying and what it’s good at (and NOT good at) before buying this product!

This is my first negative review on Amazon. The vacuum broke within the warranty period. I brought it to an authorized dealer who agreed that it wasn’t a user problem and contacted the company. The company refused to pay saying it was the users fault for the handle braking, without even contacting me.

I went to their website to email them, but its one of those contact forms where the copy of the text is not forwarded. They gave me a standard response saying take it to an authorized dealer even though I said that I did in my original text. The email didn’t respond directly to anything I had written. There was no name on the reply, so if I went back and sent another message to them I would have to start the process all over again.

I am in the process of filing complaint with the state and other agencies. Its not the money, but the principle.

I love this vacuum. I have all hardwood floors and was using a broom for a while. I decided a vacuum would keep the dust down better. This was a great choice. It picks up everything I need it to pick up, empties easily and isn’t so bulky to store.

I don’t have a pet or young children living in the house, so I can’t offer an opinion on how it picks pu pet hair, cheerios and such. :)

While I do agree with the reviewers who wish it had a longer cord, I’m still giving it 5-stars.

This vacuum sat unopened in the box for 2 months while we renovated our home and by the time I used it and realized how terrible it was, it was too late to return for a full refund.

First off, I was warned by previous reviewers: this vacuum is not, I repeat, IS NOT made to vacuum carpet. It does as good of a job as your 4 year old’s pretend vacuum would do! Even on bare floors, I find myself having to go over each area twice in order to pick up everything.

The WORST thing is, if you have a home bigger than 1000 sq ft, you’ll probably have to vacuum it in 2 sessions, as this vacuum has a ‘convenient’ automatic shut off when it gets too hot. I consider myself lucky it I can vacuum half of our 2000 sq ft home before it shuts off!

All in all, I will suffer thru this poor investment until I atleast feel I’ve gotten my money’s worth, and I won’t even bother trying to resell it used!

Certain ly what it was advertised, and does pick up. Most importantly, it is very lightweight so I can carry/pull it around the house.

We have a small house with hardwood floors and a few rugs. My husband has allergies so a hepa filter was a must and we are short on storage so it had to be small/light. We have owned this for a year and are extremely pleased with it. We vacume every week with the occasional missed week here or there.

    The price was right.
    It has a hepa filter.
It is small/light and very agile
It won’t scratch my wood floors with a revolving brush
    It doesn’t require expensive bags.
It works wonderfully and picks up plenty (the husband’s allergies would let us know if it didn’t)

Yes - you have to clean your filter. The better you clean it, the better it works. If you are too dang lazy to do this - get something big and cumbersome with more motors.

I think I would not love it so much if we had lots of carpet. Nothing traps dirt like carpet and I think you would be cleaning the filter so often that performance would be somewhat degraded. Probably better to get something more powerful in that case - just my opinion. However for us - it keeps the house spotless with only some minor maintenance required.
